Senator Higgins repeated her call for the restoration of tax relief for trade union subscriptions in a recent edition of Liberty newspaper.
Tax relief on trade union subscriptions was removed in Budget 2011. This was introduced as an austerity measure which impacted workers and was promised to be matched with a similar cut to employers with the removal of tax relief on subscriptions to professional bodies. However, this latter cut did not come to pass and has left an inequality in the tax treatment of workers and employers to collective representation.
