Unfortunately, not everyone is currently entitled to a vote in Seanad elections. This is something Senator Higgins has worked to change by co-sponsoring a Seanad Reform Bill which would give all citizens over 18 a Seanad vote.

In the meantime, It is really important that everyone who has a vote to claim it and use it to support progressive and reforming voices. Could you perhaps share this message with family and friends who may be NUI graduates and encourage them to claim their vote before 26th February?

Voter registration forms can be downloaded here http://www.nui.ie/elections/se... or you can phone the NUI on 01 439 2424 to request a form. Completed forms must be emailed to records@nui.ie or posted to NUI head office by 26 February. NUI graduates who are living overseas are also entitled to register to vote and can vote in the next Seanad election from abroad via a postal vote. Finally, if you have moved address in recent years make sure to email records@nui.ie with your current postal address.

Gender Equality Committee Launches Interim Report on Constitutional Change

I was delighted as a member of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality to attend the launch of our interim report on constitutional change today. The interim report calls for a referendum to remove the 'women in the home' clause from the Constitution and replace it with a recognition of the role and importance of care in society. The report also calls for constitutional recognition and protection of the different family types in society. Since entering the Seanad, valuing and recognising the role and importance of care in society has been a key priority and this report reflects the recommendations of the Citizen's Assembly on Gender Equality and the pressing need for constitutional change.

Bill from Senator Alice-Mary Higgins would give Coillte and Bord na Móna a “Mandate for Nature”

The Bill from Independent Senator Alice-Mary Higgins and her colleagues in the Seanad Civil Engagement Group would amend the Turf Development Act 1946 and the Forestry Act 1988 to change the outdated mandates of Bord na Móna and Coillte and insert new language on climate action and biodiversity.

In the case of Bord na Móna, this would strengthen the protection and restoration of bogs and in the case of Coillte the development and protection of native woodlands.
