Senator Higgins has been a consistent and principled voice on the pressing issues of the day. Her insightful and expert contributions across key issues such as care for our environment, global health, militarism among others draw regular notice from political commentators.

Senator Higgins contributions inside the Oireachtas have drawn frequent attention and public comment:

  • -Named by the Irish Times as Senator of the Year in 2020 and 2021, for “blow[ing] away the opposition with her prodigious work rate and high-quality, well-researched contributions. She contributes to debates on a wide range of bills – correcting, amending and commenting.”
  • -Praised by Miriam Lord in 2020 for “her tireless approach, collegial outlook, level of research, grasp of detail, participation in debates and undimmed enthusiasm for the job.”
  • -Her legislation on better pay and conditions for PhD candidates, telling the Irish Times in 2024 that, “this precarity drives people out of academia, reduces diversity and leads to less of the creative thinking we need to tackle challenges.”
  • -Her legislation to align Coillte and Bord na Móna aims with green and biodiversity goals, commenting to the Irish Independent that “changing the law would be one clear unambiguous step away from business as usual. Instead of mandates for the turf business and the forestry business, this would be a mandate for nature.”
  • -Her leading voice as a critic of the Planning and Development Bill for its non-compliance with international environmental law. The Irish Examiner covered her comments in the Seanad asking if “the Government [will] be happy to stand over that? When one gets it wrong, one does not get to bludgeon over it. It creates chaos.”

She is a frequent contributor to public discussions on tv, radio and in print media and regularly publishes op-eds and letters to newspaper editors including:
