NUI graduates who are living overseas are entitled to register to vote and can vote in future Seanad elections from abroad through a postal vote.

Independent Senator Alice-Mary Higgins, who was first elected to the Seanad Éireann NUI panel in 2016, said “last year we celebrated the centenary of the Seanad, highlighting its strong record of driving major social change and progressive legislation. I also emphasised that as well as reflecting on the past, we need to look to the future and give everyone a vote in Seanad elections.”

“This is why I have co- sponsored the Seanad Reform Bill to widen the franchise. However, while I will continue to press for reform, I do strongly encourage all NUI graduates who have the opportunity to claim a vote to register before the 26 February deadline and make sure they are heard in the next Seanad Éireann elections.”

The Civil Engagement Group in Seanad Éireann welcomes that the critically important Domestic Violence Bill 2017 has today passed committee stage in the upper house. Among the amendments agreed at committee stage today were the creation of the offence of coercive control, and the acceptance that the closer the abuser is to the abused, the more serious that offence is. This was achieved thanks to the close cooperation of Senators from Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin, Labour, the Civil Engagement Group, and independent senators, as well as constructive engagement from Minister David Stanton and his officials in the Department of Justice and Equality.
